Automatism definition
(R v Smallshire) “a complete loss of voluntary control, caused by something unforseen and is not self induced”
Automatism stage 1
Involuntary action-loss of voluntary control
(Broome v Perkins) defence failed as loss of control must be total
(Bratty) involuntary action=act done by muscles without control of the mind, such as a muscle spasm or reflex
Automatism stage 2
Caused by an external factor-something outside the body coming in
(R v Whooley) external factor is sneezing
(R v quick) diabetes(hypo) take insulin but take too much or don’t eat

Cannot be self induced-cannot be caused by
(R v Bailey) alcohol
