Autoimmune disease Flashcards
Difference between rheumatic arthritis and regular arthritis?
Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease where the body’s immune system attacks joint tissues.
* Chronic inflammatory disease primarily affects the joints but can affect the heart, lungs, and blood vessels.
* Women 3x times as likely as men to have it.
* Typically strikes at ages between 20 and 40, but can occur at any age.
* The three major symptoms of arthritis are joint pain, inflammation, and stiffness.
Osteoarthritis is a disease assumed to result from wear and tear over time.
What are the different types of immune system?
Innate (immediate) and Adaptive (takes longer) immunity.
What is the lymph nodes function?
Communication between immune cells
What is Celiac Disease, and why should you not eat anything you like during rotavirus?
Celiac disease - an intestinal inflammatory autoimmune disease in reaction to eating gluten, a protein found in wheat, barley, and rye, it triggers an immune response that damages the lining of the small intestine. This can lead to various digestive symptoms and nutrient malabsorption.
During rotavirus infection, you should be cautious about what you eat for a different reason. Rotavirus is a highly contagious virus that can cause severe diarrhea and vomiting, especially in infants and young children. Eating anything you like during a rotavirus infection can worsen dehydration and prolong the illness. Also, the food might get into the tight junctions of the cells, which are going to be opened due to the infection, and the food might be recognized by the immune system as foreign, and this could cause allergy for that specific food.
It’s crucial to follow medical advice and stay hydrated with appropriate fluids like oral rehydration solutions to prevent dehydration and its complications.
What is an Auto-immune disease?
- Tissue response and damage triggered by autoimmunity
- Precise mechanisms unknown.
- Classified as systemic or organ-specific, frequently mixed
