- Communication deficits
- Social deficits

What communication deficits are part of autism symptoms?
A
- Use of speech
- Not using non-verbal body language
- May not understand humor
- Trouble initiating + sustaining conversation
- May talk to themselves constantly, ask questions over and over again, even if they get an answer

What social deficits are part of autism symptoms?
A
- Development lags behind peers
- Shows up around 6mo of age
- No reciprocal smiling, eye contact/ cuddling
- They don’t point to other objects or play w/ other children
- Show tantrums + aggression

What motor behavior deficits are part of autism symptoms?
A
- Typically don’t show crawling, walking, sitting up (motor milestones)
- Stereotypies - twirling, rocking, hand flapping, head banging
- Suck on toys instead of playing w/ them
- Resist change, adhere rigidly to routines
