Auditory Attention Flashcards
Selective attention - Auditory
Mental selecting or filtering information
- Hearing selection is a cognitive process
- Research focused on overload
- Deliberate, controlled way
Dual task procedure
Two different tasks at once, focusing on one message
- Easier to filter out the unattended message if there are different people speaking
Shadowing tasks (repeating)
Filter theories
Auditory attention work as a filter
- 2 theories, depend on when we filter things out in the process
Early Selection
At early stage of processing, based on physical characteristics of the stimul
- Unattended stimuli not fully processed
- 1 message gets through the filtering process
Early selection - Problems
- Being at a party, still noticing your name being called
- Unattended info can slip through
Late selection
- Process most inputs with a low level of analysis
Based on semantic characteristics of the stimuli - Whats important for now is what we select, and it affects our behaviour
Auditory search
Focusing attention within auditory scene
- Where is the sound coming from
- Whats the source
- Overlap with visual search
- Looking for your phone, hearing a crying baby
Inattentional deafness
We process less auditory information than we often think we do
