Audio Flashcards
What is gain control?
The gain controls the level of the signal entering the channel.
What are channel inputs?
Each channel features either a mono or stereo input for connecting audio devices. Most mixers usually have an XLR input for microphones. For condenser microphones, there is often a phantom power switch.
what are Equalization Controls?
The equalization controls are used to cut or boost the bass, mids, and treble frequencies. Used to alter a singers voice for example.
what are aux sends?
The ‘aux sends’ control the level of the auxiliary output to other devices such as an effects unit or creating a headphone mix.
what are effect sends?
The ‘effect send’ controls the level of any connected effect devices.
what is panning?
Panning is the distribution of a sound signal into a stereo mix or multi-channel sound field. Simply put, it defines the spatial location of a sound in the soundstage, usually in terms of left, center, and right.
what is mute/solo?
The channel mute button silences the output of that particular channel when pressed. Activating the solo button silences all other channels but the one selected.
what is PFL?
Pre-fade listen. Its function is to listen to the channel’s audio at a point before the fader takes effect. The PFL button is usually located just above the channel fader.
What is a channel fader?
The channel fader is a sliding control used to control the output level of each corresponding channel.
What is the channel meter?
The channel meter is a visual representation of the channel output level. If the signal level pushes the meter into the range of the red area, the ouput level needs to be lowered to avoid distortion. Green means good.
What is the difference between a line and sound check?
A “line check” is the process of making sure that all of the microphones, cables, and direct boxes on stage etc are working before the show or soundcheck starts. A sound check’s purpose is to check the venue’s sound system and ensure that the sound in the FOH speakers and the sound on stage is clear and set at the proper volume and frequencies.
Types of cables in the audio wolrd and what they are used for?
XLRs (mics, some instruments), 1/4 inch jack (used in professional audio applications, such as amplifiers, mixers, and studio equipment), cat 5 (is an Ethernet cable, or cabling used to support computer networks. It can transmit video and telephony signals in addition to standard computer data).
What is the process of EQing?
The equalisation process “EQing” manipulates sound (lows, mids and highs) to make thighs sound as best as they can. Most commonly done before performances to avoid stress and make things sound good before the performance starts.
What is phantom power?
Gives signal 48 volts of power, everything requires different volts of power, with some requiring 48 volts. These are condenser microphones and DI boxes.
Describe what a matrix output does
Creates more main outputs to new speakers (Creates extra controls to speakers)
