What does audience mean in media?
Any group of people who consume a media product.
What does categorise mean in media?
Dividing the audience into different groups based on demographic or psychographic characteristics.
What does mainstream/mass mean in media?
A media product which is used by a large audience.
What does niche mean in media?
A media product which may only appeal to a small group of people.
What is demographics?
An audience profile based on things that are easily measurable. It uses quantitative data.
What is psychographics?
An audience profile based on psychological characteristics. It uses qualitative data.
What are some examples of demographic characteristics?
Income, location, sexuality, ethnicity, age, disability, race, social class, gender, religion, occupation, family structure, education, etc.
What are some examples of psychographic characteristics?
Opinions, lifestyle, hobbies, interests, desires, goals, values, personality, etc.
What typically appeals to young children?
Colourful visuals, child-like relatable characters, light themes, short episodes, simple and basic ideas.
What typically appeals to teenagers?
Longer videos with relatable characters that have similar experiences, popular trends, more complex ideas, social media, music, exploring identity.
What typically appeals to adults?
Interesting/nostalgic history, financial advice, educational videos, relationship advice, relatable characters.
What would appeal to all ages equally?
Media could appeal to all audiences by involving characters which are of all ages and are relatable to audiences of all ages.
What are gender roles?
Behaviours and attitudes that are generally considered acceptable, appropriate, or desirable for a person based on that person’s perceived gender.
