Construction of a New Building - Standpipe requirements

A

When the working deck reaches a height of 75 feet or greater above the ground - a permanent or temporary standpipe system is required
The standpipe shall serve all floors where permanent stairs are required
Permanent stairs are required to be within a distance of 40 feet or 4 floors below the working deck at all times
Standpipes must be painted red
When freezing conditions may be encountered- it shall be maintained as a dry system

Fire watch must be done by fire guards after 4 hours or if area more than 50,000 square feet
If giving a VO for Fireguards - One fire guard is needed for each 50,000 square feet of patrol
Issue a criminal summons if required notifications to the FDNY were not made
A-500 sent to Division commander and FPCU- forwarded for commercial occupancies only if OOS for more than one business day and a commercial or large life residential building is involved
An A-8 to BFP, Suppresion Unit is required if doubt or there’s an OOS sprinkler or standpipe

Issue a VO (Comply Forthwith) for the restoration of the system
Sprinkler systems in R-3 occupancies must be maintained in perfect working order
As of the 2014 Fire Code - All R-3 occupancies require a sprinkler system throughout if the roadway has an unobstructed width of less than 34 feet

When creating a VO for which there is no preprinted order, start with SP and use words like “Failure to maintain or provide”
Ensure a remedy is provided using words like “Maintain or Provide”
In “Comply Forthwith” or “Comply Immediately” situations
1. Change “Has not been” to “Is Not”
2. Change “ in ____ days” to “Forthwith” or “Immediately”
In Forthwith Situations- Write the time on the order. Do not use military time.
Forthwith normally means approximately 24 hours
Immediately means work to remedy the condition shall begin at that time.

A

Complaints in your administrative district should be inspected promptly when received
While complaints should be investigated promptly, they must be investigated within 24 hours
The officer must file an Investigation of Complaint Report, A-17 (Interim or Final) and record each attempt to inspect on this form
When access is not possible, mark the interim box on the A-17
The officer should fax an “Unendorsed Copy” of the A-17 (Final or Interim) to the BISP Unit immediately after completing the investigation
For interim reports, take no other action, as only final reports are emailed to the Battalion
At least ONE attempt per day should be made to complete the investigation
If not completed within 72 hours, notify the BISP unit and be guided by their instructions
