how are mycobacteria transmitted?
from the environment (water, food, soil, animals)
what is the most common type of mycobacterium?
MAC
who gets the disseminated disease? what are the sx?
immunosuppressed -
fever, wt loss, diarrhea
who gets the pulmonary diseases?
adults -
cough, wt loss, sputum production
which population usually gets MAC?
elderly men with COPD (but seen in other healthy populations)
what is nontuberculous mycobacteria of the lymph and who gets it?
lymphadenopathy with skin induration.
usually children under 5
which mycobacterium causes lymph node disease?
MAC
when does nontuberculous mycobacteria of the skin/tissue/joint/bone occur? what mycobacterium causes it?
after trauma or superficial laceration -
M. marinum
how do you get m. marinum?
from contact with water (any type) and fish

how is leprosy transmitted?

where is leprosy most common?
tropical countries
what is the treatment of leprosy?
dapsone + Rif +/- clofazimine, 6mos to 2 years
how do you treat MAC?
Clarithromycin or azithromycin
+ ethambutol
+ Rifampin
