Attribute 3 - Management & Leadership Flashcards
What is the difference between QA and QRC?
Quality control is the inspection aspect of quality management whilst quality assurance details how the process is performed.
Quality assurance is provided internally to management through audits.
What is the difference between being a ‘manager’ and being a ‘leader’?
Managing is to have the ability to control a group or individuals to achieve a set outcome. Being a Leader is to have an influence, motivation and ability to enable others to contribute to success.
How would you develop/ support a new young member of staff brought into your team under your supervision?
Ensure they are equipped with the right tools to carry out their job
Provide them with the necessary training for which to do their job
Help them set goals to improve performance
Become a resource to them
Hold them accountable for their work
In what way did your leadership skills help the project?
Future development of my Engineers through training. Focused on creating a good work ethic within my team by sitting down weekly/ fortnightly with team members.
Empowered others by giving them challenging work and putting them in positions of responsibility whilst also celebrating individual wins with the entire group.
I paid close attention to employee morale and addressed issues when they come to light by helping my younger team members and provide support.
What would you do if you had any staff performance issues?
I’d start with clear communication to the staff member in question, providing constructive feedback to help steer someone to self-improvement within work.
I would set measurable small targets for them to aim for whilst ensuring they had the support and resources for opportunities for improvement.
How would you manage multi-disciplinary teams?
Understand who does what and why.
Clearly define roles of the subcontractor and establish comprehensive policies and procedures.
Establish a system where there is respect and trust within the team.
Insist and implement solid strategies and transparency across the teams.
Would you consider yourself to be a leader or a manager?
I would consider myself a leader due to the close contact I have with my team and direct influence I have on their performance.
What would you do if you tried to implement using a software etc. as it was better, and the person above said no?
Develop a presentation on the benefits of the programme and hold a collective insight do demonstrate to people its effectiveness.
What processes do you use to help develop junior staff?
Training courses, graduate schemes/development programmes, weekly check ins.
Can you outline a quality process you have implemented?
Having written ITP’s for construction works I can say that my quality processes are being followed on site by members of my team.
How would you monitor the effectiveness of your company QA system?
Carry out a Quality Audit on our processes/ documents.
Can you provide an example where you have implemented lessons learnt to improve the quality of deliverable/task/project?
I have carried out PvA’s on tasks that we have carried out. An example is the column construction process where I have streamlined designs and worked to establish a better, more safer method of pouring.
Can you provide an example where you have been responsible for the output quality from a remote team/sub-Contractor, what issues did you experience and how did you address them?
Yes, with a piling contractor- I asked them to raise an NCR so we could record the quality defect. If there was a hit to programme this was recorded in the site diary and addressed at the next risk reduction meeting (An EWN was raised).
Describe your involvement in the project and how you dealt with a ‘particular problem’
There was a performance dispute between two of my team. I pulled them both in separately to have a discussion and here it from both sides. In this instance, I sought to change the way in which the two were working with one another by specifically allocating them tasks instead of collectively as a team.
Can you give us an example of you building an effective team?
Delegating work to play to peoples strengths whilst also giving team members an opportunity to shine in areas of development as they progressed.
