What did Chamberlain do in Africa?
1) Ordered the Uganda Railway which connected the East African coast with the interior.
2) Sanctioned the conquest and annexation of Ashantiland into the Gold Coast of West Africa.
3) In 1900 he supervised the acquisition of territories of the Royal Niger Company which became formal British colonies.
What were Chamberlain’s attitudes towards Empire?
That the imperial bonds needed reinforcing if the Empire was to be preserved or if, indeed, Britain was to maintain its status as a world power.
How did Chamberlain show his belief in an imperial duty?
His convictions very much reflected those of the spirit of high imperialism, ‘I believe that the British race is the greatest governing race that the world has ever seen’.
When and why did Chamberlain form the Tariff Reform League?
To convince the British public of the need for duties on all foreign goods so as to give the colonies imperial preference and access to a duty-fee a British market.
What did the Tariff Reform League do?
Distribute large numbers of leaflets and play Chamberlain’s recorded messages - propaganda.
What happened in the 1906 election?
Chamberlain suffered a landslide defeat to the Liberals (their greatest majority since 1830s).
Shortly after he suffered from a stroke and his political career was over.
