Attitude
a lasting, general evaluation of people, objects, advertisments, or issues (tends to be a predictive behaviour)
Functional Theory of Attitudes
Attitudes exist because they servce some function for the person
Utilitarian Function
Relates to rewards and punishments
Value-Expressive Function
Expresses consumer’s values or self-concept
Ego-Defensive Function
Protect ourselves from external threats or internal threats
Knowledge Function
Need for order, structure, or meaning
Affect
The way a consumer feels about an attitude object
Behaviour
actions a consumer takes toward an attitude object (or their intentions to take action about it)
Cognition
Beliefs a consumer has about an attitude object
Compliance
Lowest level of attitude commitment: consumer forms attitude because it helps them gain rewards or avoid punishments (easy to change)
Identification
Mid level of attitude commitment: attitudes formed in order to conform to another person or group
Internalisation
Highest level of attitude commitment: deep-seeded attitudes become part of consumer’s value system (hard to change)
Consistency Principle
We value/seek harmony among thoughts, feelings, and behaviours
