Methylphenidate, atomoxetine, dexamphetamine, lisdexamphetamine.
What class of drugs do methylphenidate and atomoxetine fall into?
CNS stimulants.
Which drugs are used to treat ADHD in children who have not responded to treatment with methylphenidate or atomoxetine?
Dexamphetamine or lisdexamphetamine.
What monitoring is required when patients are treated with atomoxetine?
Pulse, blood pressure, psychiatric symptoms, appetite, weight, and height should be recorded at initiation, following dose change, and at least every 6 months.
What are the symptoms of the hepatic disorders associated with atomoxetine use? What should be done if this occurs?
Abdominal pain, unexplained nausea, malaise, darkening of the urine or jaundice. Medical attention must be sought.
What psychiatric symptoms is rarely associated with atomoxetine use?
Risk of suicidal thoughts and behaviours. Report to GP any clinical worsening, suicidal thoughts or behaviour, irritability, agitation, or depression.
Dexamphetamine and lisdexamphetamine should be discontinued when what symptoms occur in patients with Tourette’s syndrome?
If there is an exacerbation of tics.
Why should height and weight be monitored in children treated with dexamphetamine and lisdexamphetamine?
Growth restriction can occur with long term use.
