Attention and Sleep Flashcards

1
Q
Kim Kardashian was being
interviewed regarding her
robbery. She doesn’t recall what
the robbers looked like, she just
knew they had a gun. Why can’t
she remember anything else?
A

Attentional Narrowing

  • arousal can increase attention to central details
  • if she was exposed to guns frequently, then she would suffer this less and be able to remember the other details

Q
When you first started driving
you paid close attention to
everything on the road. Now you
can drive while playing Pokemon
Go. What process made this
change happen?
A
Automatization
(process by which a procedure
changes from requiring lots of
attention to being relatively
automatic)

Q

Describe the human

sleep cycle

A
  • 5 stages
  • First four stages of sleep are NREM (90 minutes)
  • REM sleep is final stage (10 minutes)

-You pass through this 100 minute cycle 4 to 6 times
a night

-As the night progresses, the amount of time you
spend in deep sleep (stages 3 and 4) decrease and

Q

Differences
between REM
and NREM

A

NREM
-reduced muscle tension throughout body

  • minimal movement (body capable, but brain rarely requests it to move)
  • low temp. & low energy consumption
  • heart rate, respiration, and kidney function slow down

REM
-EEG indistinguishable from awake state

  • high oxygen consumption
  • increased and irregular heart & respiration rates
  • muscle atonia
  • body temp. drops

-dreams are hallucinatory, emotional, narrative, and with frequent
movements
