Attention Flashcards
divided attention
when an individual performs two tasks at the same time which require attention silmutaenously.
joint attention
focus on an object by 2 separate individuals
directed attention
attention focused sustainably on a single task
when you divide your attention on one task between 2, you’re excercising
selective attention
selective attention
ability to maintain attention while being resented with masking or interfering stimuli
exogenous/external
don’t have to tell ourselves to look for them to capture our attention, loud noise, pop-out effect etc
endogenous/internal
requires internal knowledge to understand the cue and the intention to follow. mouse arrow etc
cocktail party effect
type of endogenous cue in which one has the ability to concentrate on one voice in a crowd
in-attentional (perceptual) blindess
we aren’t of things not in our visual field when our attention is directed somewhere else in that field (failure to notice something in plain sight)
change blindness
fail to notice changes from a previous to a current state in the environment (don’t notice your mom got a new haircut)
distal stimuli
objects and events out in the worlds about you
proximal stimuli
patterns of stimuli from the objects and events around you that actually reach your senses
covert orienting
bringing the spotlight of attention on object/event without eye or body movement
overt orienting
person turns all or part of body to alter or maximize the sensory impact of an event
attention capture
attention is attracted by motion of an object or stimuli
