Attatchment Styles Flashcards
Harry Harlow
Lead an experiment on attachment that tested whether a monkey would prefer a wired mother who fed them, or a clothed mother who comforted them.
Mary Ainsworth
Designed the Strange Situation experiments. Tested for attachment between mother and baby after the mother left the room and a stranger came in.
Secure Attachment
Is upset when mother leaves, cries and refuses to be comforted by a stranger. Once the mother returns, the baby will make an effort to touch them and return to playing. The mother is sensitive and responsive to the baby’s needs.
Insecure Avoidant Attachment
When the mother leaves the room, the baby feels indifferent. When the mother returns, the baby is indifferent, but may seek contact and eventually pull away. Mothers are insensitive and unresponsive to the baby’s needs.
Insecure Ambivalent Attachment
When the mother leaves, the baby is very distressed. When the mother returns, the baby feels ambivalent and resentful of the caregiver. Mothers are engaged on their own needs.
Disorganized / Disoriented Attachment
Odd behavior, such as freezing and running from parents. Thought to typically occur in abusive relationships.
