Attachment L1 Flashcards
What is reciprocity?
When each person responds to the other and elicits a response from them.
What is interactional synchrony?
The temporal co-ordination of micro-level social behaviour
What did Meltzoff and Moore study?
They studied infants responses to four stimuli.
What were the four stimuli?
Three different faces plus a hand gesture
What did Meltzoff and Moore find?
They found that infants as young as 2-3 weeks old imitated the facial gestures. Therefore there was an association between infant behaviour and that of the adult model
What is an issue with this study (A03 - Infant)?
Problems with testing infant behaviour - It is difficult to reliably test their behaviour. Gestures that were tested occur frequently. This makes it difficult to distinguish between general behaviour and specific behaviour .
What is an issue of the study (A03)?
Failure to replicate - Studies such as the one conducted by Koepke failed to replicate M&Ms findings. Meltzoff argued that Koepkes study was not controlled enough. Furthermore, Marian found that infants could not distinguish live interactions from videotapes of their mothers
What is a strength of this study (A03)?
Murray and Trevarthen got mothers to interact with babies over video monitor. Next, babies were played a tape of mother, thus wasn’t responding. Babies tried to get attention but when say they couldn’t gave up. Shows babies want reciprocity.
What were the categories that the babies behaviour was split up into (A01)?
Mouth opening
Termination of mouth opening
Tongue protrusion
Termination of tongue protrusion
What did Meltzoff and Moore want to study?
The interactions between a mother and infant
