Attachment - institutionalisation Flashcards
What is institutionalisation?
Children are cared for by the state extended stays in institution such as children’s homes are thought all of behaviour. They do not provide the same level of emotional care. It is thought to influence child development negatively.
What is deprivation versus privation?
Deprivation is not receiving suitable emotional care from a primary attachment figure; this can happen with frequent or extended absences of the primary caregiver. However, privation is more severe it is total lack of care so there is no ability to form attachment bond.
What was Rutter’s procedure for the Romanian orphan study?
He split the Romanian children into three groups - those adopted whilst under six months - between two months and six years and those older than two years.
The development was compared to a control group of British adoptees.
What were the main findings of Rutters study on Romanian orphans?
At age 6: Children adopted six months showed disinhibited attachment and overly friendly behaviour to strange adults. This was more common in those ad adopted after two years.
At age 11: over half the children who had shown this disinhibited attachment still displayed this behaviour. They also had a significant physical emotional and intellectual development delay.
What is the conclusion for Rutter study on Romanian orphans?
Research suggest that adoption within the first six months as important as the rate of recovery depends on age at adoption and the effect of privation in institutions are severe and long lasting. However many children even adopted after two years so recovery suggesting the critical period is a sensitive period.
