Attachment in Adults Flashcards
What are different behaviour types more likely to be?
- Securely attached infants tend to form better quality friendships
- Insecure resistant children more likely to be bullies
- Insecure avoidant children more likely to be the victim of bullying
What did Quinton do?
Compared 50 women who had been in institutions with 50 women who had been raised at home. Institutionalised women had more difficulty as parents
What did Sroufe do?
Conducted longitudinal study which followed participants from infancy to late adolescence and found a relationship between early attachment and later emotional and social behaviour
What did Sroufe find?
Securely attached in infancy were rated as more socially competent later in childhood, more popular, less isolated and more popular. This supports the idea that early attachments impact on our later behaviours and social relationships
What did Hazan and Shaver aim to do?
Investigate whether there was a link between infant attachment style and their future behaviour in romantic relationships
What was the procedure?
620 participants competed the love quiz which was printed in an american local newspaper
What were the 3 sections of the quiz?
- Asked about current or most important relationship
- Asked about their experiences of love in general
- Attachment type was assessed by answering questions about their feelings
What did Hazan and Shaver find?
56% of participants identified as securely attached, 25% insecure avoidant and 19% insecure resistant
What did they conclude?
Patterns of attachment behaviour learnt in childhood are transferred to adulthood, supports the internal working model

- Gender bias: more females than males
- Cannot be generalised: in one magazine
- Lie in quiz/ closed questions
