Attachment - Cultural variations Flashcards
Who looked at proportions of secure, insecure avoidant and insecure resistant attachments across a range of countries. Also differences within same countries for the idea of variations within a culture
Van Ijzendoorn and Kroonberg (meta analysis)
Procedure
Found 32 studies of attachment where SS has been used. Overall the studies yielded results 1990 children across 8 countries
Data was meta analysed - results being combined and weighted for sample size
Findings and Conclusions
Secure attachment most common classification in all countries but ranged from 50% in China to 75% in Britain
Name a strength of the study
Use of indigenous researchers (same cultural backgrounds as the participants)
Give two limitations
Impact of confounding variables - studies conducted in different countries may not be matched for sample characteristics
Imposing a test designed in one culture (an imposed etic) - different cultural context from the one for which is was designed may be meaningless
