Define attachment
Emotional tie between two people, two way process that endured over tome, leads to certain behaviours such as clinging and proximity seeking
Reciprocity
Infants coordinate their actions with caregivers, act as if they are taking turns
What is interactional synchrony
Temporal coordination of micro level social behaviour, actions and emotions mirror each other
What age is asocial stage
0-6 weeks
What ages is indiscriminate attachment stage
6 weeks to 6 months
Age of specific attachments
7-12 months
Age of multiple attachment stage
10/11 months +
What is asocial stage
Babies show similar responses to objects and people, don’t prefer certain people, prefer to look at moth and eyes and learn from familiar smells and sound
What is indiscriminate attachment stage
Babies become more sociable, can tell people apart and prefer familiar company, can be comforted by anyone, don’t show fear of strangers
What is specific attachment stage
Baby begins to show seperation anxiety, show fear of strangers
What is multiple attachment phase
Multiple attachments follow soon after the first attachment, baby shows secondary attachments towards several people such as grandparents and siblings
2 strengths of schaffers study
Longitudinal study was used which reduces individual differences adding consistency
Multiple research methods used such as interviews and observations collects more data so generalised
2 weaknesses of schaffers study
Limited bias sample of 60 babies from Glasgow’s, doesn’t explore child rearing so reduces validity
Outdated, 1964 and parenting techniques have evolved such as stay at home fathers which reduces accuracy of results
