Attachment Flashcards
Attachment
An emotional bond between two people. It is a two way process that endures over time.
Reciprocity
Interaction between two people where they respond to each others signals, one after the other.
-Turn taking/ back and forth
What is an example of reciprocity?
if the caregiver cuddles the infant (a positive interaction) the infant may respond by smiling at the care giver (similar positive interaction)
Who suggested that babies move in a rhythm while communicating with an adult?
Brazelton (1979)
Interactional synchrony
Each person mirrors what the other is doing in terms of their facial and body movements. Contains a sense of synchrony or ‘togetherness’
What is an example of interactional synchrony?
If the caregiver holds a certain facial expression the infant would mimic the facial expression at the same time.
Who suggested that even young babies would mimic facial expressions?
Meltzoff and Moore (1997)
What are the differences between reciprocity and interactional synchrony?
Reciprocity is an interaction that involves turn taking (almost like a conversation) whereas interactional synchrony is an interaction. that evolved a sense of togetherness as each person mirrors the other.
