Attachment Flashcards
Attachment
a strong reciprocal emotional bond between an infant and primary care giver
Reciprocity
a description of how two people interact - turn taking
How is caregiver infant interaction reciprocal?
both caregiver and baby respond to each others signals and elicit a response from the other
Alert Phases
Babies have periodic alert phases in which they signal that they are ready for a spell of interaction (e.g. making eye contact)
Feldman and Eidelman (2007)
research shows that mothers usually pick up and respond to their baby’s alertness around 2/3 of the time.
This varies according to external factors e.g. stress (Finegood et al 2016)
What 3 behaviours are displayed when an attachment is developing
- Proximity
- Separation Distress
- Secure base behaviour
Proximity
People try to stay physically close to their attachment figures
Separation Distress
people show signs of anxiety when an attachment figure leaves their presence
Secure-base behaviour
even when were independent of our attachment figure, we tend to make regular contact with them e.g. babies returning to AF whilst playing
Interactional Synchrony
occurs when the caregiver and baby reflect both actions and emotions of the other in a coordinated /synchronised way
Meltzoff and Moore (1983)
demonstrated that interactional synchrony occurred with infants imitating facial expressions, tongue protrusions and mouth openings from an adult model when only 3 days- 2 weeks old
Codon and Sander (1974)
children can synchronise their movements with the sound of an adults voice (demonstrated with Brazleton)
