Atrovent, drug class? Route?
Anticholinergic (Blocks the normal actions of acetylcholine and the PNS)
Inhaled via nebulizer
Another name for Atrovent?
Ipratropium Bromide
Atrovent, dose?
All doses are combined w/ 2.5mg Albuterol.
In Adults, 0.5mg in 2.5 mL NS
What does Atrovent do? Onset? Duration?
Anticholinergic action (bronchodilation, drying of secretions)
Onset: 5-15 minutes
Duration: 4-6hrs
Atrovent, indications?
Bronchospasms from asthma or COPD that does not respond to the 1st dose of Albuterol.
Ipratropium Bromide, precautions?
Notify medical control if pt has a history of:
Glaucoma, prostatic hypertrophy, bladder neck obstruction
Ipratropium Bromide, Side effects?
Dry mouth
Cough or worsening symptoms
GI disturbance
Blurred vision
Ipratropium Bromide, Contraindications?
Sensitivity to soy products, Atropine
*IF the bronchoconstriction is due to an allergic reaction epinephrine must be used first!
