What drug class is Albuterol in?
Sympathomimetic (mimics the actions of the Sympathetic Nervous System)
Other names for Albuterol?
Ventolin, Proventil
What route is Albuterol given?
Inhaled
Can be bagged via ET tube
What receptor does Ventolin activate?
Beta 2 (Bronchodilation)
Albuterol, dosage?
Nebulized - 2.5mg over 5-15 minutes
- If pt is improving after the 1st dose, 2 additional doses may be given.
- If there is NO improvement after the 1st Albuterol dose, combine 2nd and 3rd doses of Albuterol w/ Ipratropium Bromide (Atrovent).
Indications that Albuterol is appropriate?
Bronchospasms from asthma or COPD.
*2nd line drug for allergic reactions unresponsive to epinephrine or Benadryl. (Pts in anaphylaxis need epinephrine first).
Albuterol, Precautions? Side Effects?
Heart Disease
Restlessness, Hypertension, Tachycardia - palpitations
Albuterol, contraindications?
Pregnancy (can increase HR and Blood Sugar levels in the fetus).
