ATP and O2 Flashcards
1
Q
basic principle of ATP-ADP cycle
A
fuel oxidation generates ATP, and hydrolysis of ATP to ADP provides energy for work in the cell
2
Q
gibbs free energy in cells
A
amount of energy generated us determined by difference in energy levels of substrates and products - change in gibbs free energy
deltaG for energy production from fuel oxidation must be greater than deltaG for energy-requiring process
3
Q
bonds between phosphate groups in ATP
A
phosphoanhydride bonds
instability arises from their negatively charged phosphate groups - repel eachother and strain bonds
when bonds are hydrolysed, energy is released because products of the main reaction are more stable, w/ lower bond energies than reactants
