Atoms, Elements compounds and mixtures Flashcards
What is a Atom?
An Atom is the smallest part of an element that can exist.
What is a Element?
An element is a substance that contains only one sort of atom. There are about 100 different elements.
How are Elements displayed?
They are displayed in the periodic table.
What is a compound?
A compound contains atoms of two or more elements, which are chemically combined in fixed proportion.
How is a compound represented?
Represented by a combination of Numbers and chemical symbols called a ‘chemical formula’.
What is a word equation or balanced symbol equation?
They can sum up what has happened during a chemical reaction.
How is a equation laid out?
- The reactants ( substances that react) are on the left-hand side.
- The products( the new substances that are formed) are on the right- hand side of the equation.
Mixtures
It consist of two or more elements or compounds, which are not chemically combined.
Crystallisation
Used to obtain a soluble solid from a solution.
1. Heat up the mixture
2. The water evaporates leaving crystals of pure salt/ soluble solid.
Required practice: Simple distillation
- Set up equipment
- Set heat - 100*c
- Water collects in the condenser and changes state from liquid to gas, collects this pure water in beaker.
- When all water evaporated, measure mass of solid that remains to find amount of dissolved solids present in sample.
Chromatography
Used to separate the different soluble, colored components of a mixture.
