Atoms, Elements and Compunds Flashcards
An element is…
A substance that cannot be separated into other substances
A compound is…
A substance made of more than one element
A mixture is…
A group of elements or compounds that are in the same container, but aren’t chemically bonded together
An atom is…
A part of an element that cannot be made any smaller
How do you name a compound made of 2 elements?
You have to put the metal before the non-metal in the name, and change the ending of the non-metal to ‘ide’.
What do you have to change the ending to when the compound has oxygen?
‘ate’
If an element and a compound react, what happens?
If the element is more reactive than the metal in the compound, the metal that was in the compound separates from said compound. The element and the non-metal in the compound turn into a new compound.
If 2 compounds react, what happens?
The metals in the compounds switch.
If sodium chloride and lead nitride react, what is formed?
Sodium nitride and lead chloride
If 2 substances react, what happens to the weight?
The total weight of them is the same.
What happens to the weight if 2 substances react and a gas is produced?
The total weight is smaller.
How do you determine the chemical symbol of an element?
The Periodic Table
What is a lattice?
It is when the atoms of a substance are set out like a solid.
What is a molecule?
2 or more atoms chemically bonded together.
How do you determine the chemical formula of a compound?
Combine all the elements in the substance. Then add numbers showing the amounts.
What is the chemical formula of lead oxide?
PbO
On a element on the Periodic Table, what is the bigger number?
The atomic mass.
What is the smaller number on a Periodic Table square?
The atomic number.
What does the atomic number represent?
The number of protons/electrons in an element.
How do you figure out the number of neutrons in an element?
The atomic mass-the atomic number
Every atom has a lot of shells that house the electrons, but how many electrons can the first 3 take?
The first shell can take 2 electrons, and the next 2 can take 8 each.
