Atoms elements and compounds Flashcards
What are elements
They are substances which cannot be chemically broken down. They are made up of one type of atom.
What are atoms
They are the smallest unit of an element
What are compounds
They are substances which have been chemically bonded from atoms of two or more elements
What are the particles within an atom
Protons, neutrons and electrons
What charge do atoms have
0
What charge do protons/neutrons/electrons
+1/0/-1
What is the periodic table
It is a table which includes all the known elements order in atomic number.
What are the rows called and how many of them
Periods and there are 7 of them
What are the columns called and how many of them
Groups and there are 8 of them
The elements of the periodic table are split into metals and non-metals how what is the left side
Metals
What is the atomic mass
It is the mass of the protons and neutrons
What is the conservation of mass
When elements react there must be the same number of atoms for each element in the reactant and the product. If not you will have to balance out the equation
If you react a metal with a non-metal you get
Metal non-metal ide
