Q

What to do when working out the masses of gases at room temp? For example 1920cm3 C3H8?

A

Find the volume multiplied by the RMM and then if in cm3 divide by 24,000 and if in dm3 divide by 24
1920 x 44 = 84480
84480 / 24000 = 3.52

Q

What to do when finding the volume of a gas at room temperature and only given mass and RMM? For example 1.485g HCN(g)?

A

Do the mass divided by the RMM - 1.282/64.1 = 0.02

Then multiply by 24 if not given cm3 or dm3 = 0.48dm3

Q

Find the mass of potassium hydroxide required to prepare 250cm3 of a 0.200 mol dm-3 solution?

A

Mol = cv/1000 (volume in cm3)
(0.200 * 250)/1000 = 0.05
Find the RMM of KOH and then multiply by mol
39.1 + 16 + 1 = 56.1
0.05 = 2.805 g

A

Toothpaste to prevent tooth decay

17
Q

What are crystals of calcium fluoride used for?

A

Make lenses to focus infrared light

18
Q

Why do some people not want chlorine in water

A

May react with organic matter to form chlorinated hydrocarbons which may cause cancer
Peruvians stopped and cholera followed

19
Q

How to work out molecular formula

A

Find empirical formula
Divide relative molecular mass by relative formula mass
Whatever number produced multiply by empirical formula

20
Q

At room temp and pressure what is the molar volume

A

24dm3

21
Q

What is a mole?

A

The amount of any substance containing as many particles as there are carbon atoms in exactly 12 g of the carbon 12 Isotope

22
Q

What is the empirical formula?

A

The simplest whole number ratio of atoms of each element present in a compound

23
Q

What is a standard solution?

A

It is a solution of known concentration

24
Q

What is stoichiometry?

A

The molar relationship between the relative quantities of substances taking part in a reaction

25
Q

What happens when you add ammonia and water together?

A

NH3 + H2O (equilibrium sign) NH4+ + OH-

26
Q

Why are amino acids amphoretic?

A

Because they have acidic and basic properties

in amino acid molecule contains a carboxyl acid group and an amino acid group

27
Q

How is a salt made?

A

any chemical compound formed from an acid

h+ ion from the acid has been replaced by a metal ions or another positive ion such as an ammonium ion

28
Q

What is an example of a diprotic acid?

A

Sulfuric acid as it has two replaceable h+ ions
