Atoms and Molecules Flashcards
What does electrically neutral mean?
The number of protons is equal to the number of electrons, no net charge.
What does isotopes mean?
Atoms of the same elements that have different numbers of neutrons and same number of protons.
What is the similarity and difference between the properties of isotopes?
Similarity: Similar chemical properties.
Difference: Different physical properties.
What are nucleons?
The protons and neutrons in an atom.
What type of ion has a positive charge?
Cation.
What type of ion has a negative charge?
Anion.
What type of ion does a atom make when it gains two electrons?
Anion.
What is the similarity and difference between atoms and ions?
Similarity: Same number of protons and neutrons.
Difference: Different number of electrons.
What is the definition of a molecule?
It is made up of 2 or more atoms chemically combined.
Name an example of an element that exists as a molecule.
Oxygen/hydrogen/nitrogen/chlorine.
Name an example of a compound that exists as a molecule.
Water/Carbon dioxide
What is the difference between an atom and a molecule?
An atom exists on its own but a molecule is made up of 2 or more atoms chemically combined.
What is the difference between a molecule of an element and a molecule of a compound?
A molecule of an element is made up of one type of atom chemically combined whereas a molecule of a compound is made up of 2 or more types of atoms chemically combined.
