Atoms Flashcards
1
Q
What constructs all living life in the universe?
A
Atoms.
2
Q
Composition of an atom?
A
Protons and Neutrons in the middle, electrons surrounding the protons and neutrons.
3
Q
How many shells are in an atom? How many can each shell hold?
A
There are a total of 7 shells in an atom.
- 2 electrons.
- 8 electrons.
- 8 electrons.
- 18 electrons.
- 18 electrons.
- 32 electrons.
- 32 electrons.

Q
How do you draw atoms based soley on the periodic table?
A
- Find your element.
- Look at the atomic weight. The atomic weight is directly proportional to the amount of electrons.
- Determine which row on the periodic table the element is in - in the top row there is 1 shell, in the 2nd row, there are two shells and so on.
- Draw a nucleus with the element inside surrounded by the shells.
- Add the number of electrons.
- BAM! done

Q
What did Democritus do to benefit the atom development? What backup did he have?
A
Democritus initially proposed that the universe is entirely proposed of small particles called atoms. He tested this by crushing objects into their tiniest form of particles.
