Atomic Trends Flashcards
what is the trend to do with atomic radius
AR decreases as you move acorss a period and increases as you move down the groups
what is the reason behind this trend of atomic radius
decreasing: across a period electrons are added but only to the one shell this means that protons have stronger attraction the shell because there are more protons and still the same shell
increasing: going down the groups new shells are added which means protons are further away and pull in less
what is ionization energy
the energy required to remove outer most electrons from one mol of an atom in gas phase
what is the trend to do with ionization energy
IE increases across a period and decrease down the groups
what is the reason behind this trend of ionization energy
the number of protons increases but electrons are being added to the same shell. electrons are attracted more strongly therefore more energy is required to remove them
what is electronegativity
the atoms ability to attract electrons from other atoms
what is the trend to do with electronegativity
EN increases across a period and decreases down the group
what is the reason behind this trend of electronegativty
due to the strong pull of positive nucleus, atoms further along the period can attract electrons more strongly, also on left they are making cation
what is core charge
attractive force of nucleus on the valence electrons (protons - inner shell electrons)
what is the trend to do with core chagre
CC increases across period and stays the same down the group
