Atomic structure - The atom Flashcards
What is the mass and charge of a proton
Mass - 1
Charge - +1
What is the mass and charge of a neutron
Mass- 1
Charge - 0
What is the mass and charge of a electron
Mass- 1/2000
Charge - (-1)
On a symbol what do the top and bottom number represent
Top number is the mass number ( total number of protons and neutrons )
Bottom number is the atomic number (number of protons)
What property do ions have
Different number of protons and electrons
What is an isotope
An isotope is an atom from an element with the same number of protons but different number of neutrons
Who described atoms as solid spheres
John Dalton
Who conducted the Alpha scattering experiment
Rutherford
What happened during the alpha scattering experiment
Fired positively charged alpha particles to a thin sheet of gold and found that most of the particles went straight through however a few were deflected. This led to the development of the nuclear model as the plum pudding model couldn’t be right as it suggested most particles would be deflected. The nuclear model stated that the atom was mostly empty space and that there is a positive nucleus surrounded by negative electrons.
Who proposed the idea that electrons exist in orbitals
Niels Bohr
