Atomic Structure and the Periodic Table: Elements, Compounds and Mixtures (DONE) Flashcards
What are elements?
An element is where all the atoms are the same.
What are mixtures?
A mixture has different elements or compounds but they’re not chemically combined.
What are compounds?
A compound is two or more different elements chemically joined in fixed proportions.
Do compounds usually have similar or totally different properties to the elements they’re made from?
Elements usually have totally different properties to the elements they’re made from.
If we want to separate a mixture then what type of separation technique must we use?
To separate a mixture we must use a physical separation technique.
What are examples of physical separation techniques?
Examples of physical separation techniques include: filtration, crystallisation, distillation or chromatography.
What is a molecule?
A molecule has any elements chemically combined even if they are the same element. Eg. NH3, O2, H2O
Can molecules also be compounds sometimes?
Yes, compounds can also be molecules sometimes because they contain different elements chemically combined.
