Atomic Structure Flashcards
What happened on the alpha scattering experiment?
Thomson fires a beam of alpha particles at thin gold foil
Expected particles to pass straight through or only slightly deflected
- however domes were deflected back
Made them realise most of the mass was concentrated in the centre (nucleus)
what are beta particles ?
Hugh speed electrons
What are alpha particles ?
Helium nuclei
What is gamma?
A WAVE
What is is the ore of ionising ?
ALPHA
BETA
GAMMA
What is a helium nucleus written as?
4
2 He
What is an electron written as?
0
-1 e
What is radioactivity measures in ?
Geiger muller scale
What is half life?
The time it takes for the number of radioactive nuclei in in an ISOTOPE to half
What does a short half life show ?
Activity falls quickly
Unstable nuclei
Rapidly decay
What is background radiation ?
The low level radiation that is around us at all time
What does exposure to radiation cause?
Irradiation
What is the most dangerous radioactive source ouside your body ? And inside your body?
Outside = gamma Inside = alpha
