Atomic Structure Flashcards
Structure of an atom
what gives an element its chemical and physical properties
atoms are made up of three smaller particles
electrons
negatively charged particles that spin around the positive centre of the atom in circles energy levels. Their mass it is nearly zero
Protons
positively charged particles that are contained in the nucleas of the atom they have a mass of 1 amu
Neutrons
Particles with no charge that are also contained in the necleus of the atoms, mass of 1 amu
Atomic numbers
the atomic number of an element tell us how many protons that the element has.
(bottom number)
electron arrangement
the first energy level can hold a maximum of 2 electron, others up to 8 electron
Mass number
the mass number is given at the top left of the element symbol
isotopes
isotopes are atoms with the same atomic number but different mass. same number of protons but a different number of nuetrons
