Acids and Bases Flashcards
pH for Acids
less than 7
pH for bases
above 7
pH for neutral
exactly 7
Forming alkalis
Alkalis are soluble bases. An alkaline solution can be formed when a metal oxide is dissolved in water.
Forming Acids
An acidic solution can be formed when a non-metal oxide is dissolved in water
Hydrogen ions
H+
Hydroxide Ions
OH-
Common lab acids containing H+
- Hydrochloric acids; HCl
- Nitric acid; HNO3
- Sulfuric acid; H2SO4
Common lab alkalis containing OH-
- soduim hydroxide; NaOH
- potassium hydroxide; KOH
- Calcuim hydroxide; CaOH
acidic solutions
when the number of hydrogen ions is greater then the number of hydrooxide ions, an acidic solution is formed
alkaline (basic) solutions
when the number of hydroxide ions is greater than the number hydrogen ions, an alkaline solution is formed
Neutral solution
when the number of hydroxide ions is equal to the number og hydrogen ions, a neutral solution is formed
when a acidic solution diluted with water:
- the concentration of H+ decreases
- The pH of the solution increases towards 7
when an alkaline solution is diluted with water:
- the concentration of H+ increases
- the pH of the solution decreases towards 7
Neutralisation
Acids and bases can be added to one another to make a neutral solution
