Atomic Structure Flashcards
Atoms
The smallest particles of an element that consists of electrons surrounding a nucleus that contains protons and neutrons
Molecule
A group of two or more atoms chemically joined together forming an identifiable unit which retains the properties and composition of the substance
Proton
Relative charge: +1
Relative mass: 1
Neutron
Relative charge: 0
Relative mass: 1
Electron
Relative charge: -1
Relative mass: 1/1836
Atomic number
The number of protons in the nucleus of an atom
Mass number
The sum of the number of protons and neutrons in the nucleus of an atom
Isotopes
Atoms of the same element contain te same number of protons and electrons but a different number of neutrons. Therefore, they have the same atomic number but a different mass number
Relative atomic mass (Ar)
Weighted average mass of one atom of an element, taking into account the abundance of all the isotopes of that element. It is measured as a ration 1/12 of the mass of an atoms of carbon -12
Relative atomic mass (Ar) equation
Ar = (% of isotope a x mass of isotope a) + (% isotope b x mass of isotope b) / 100
Period
These are the horizontal rows that show the number of shells of electrons an atom has and are numbered 1-7
Group
These are the vertical columns that show how many outer electrons each atom has and are number from 1-7
