Atomic Structure Flashcards
What are the three sub-atomic particles that make up an atom?
Protons, neutrons and electrons
Where are electrons found and what do they do?
Electrons are found in shells which orbit around a Nucleus (Rather like planets around the sun)
what are the masses of each sub-atomic particles of an atom?
Proton=1
Neutron=1
Electron=1/1840
What are the charges of each sub-atomic particles?
Protons=+1
Neutrons=0 (no charge)
Electron=-1
what are the terms for mass number and atomic number?
Atomic= The number of protons in the nucleus of an atom
Mass Number= This is the total number of protons and neutrons in the nucleus of an atom
why does an atom have no electrical charge?
There are always the same number of electrons (negative) and proton (positive)
how do you work out how many protons, electrons and neutrons are in an atom?
To calculate the number of neutrons :
Mass number - Atomic number
Big number - small number
protons & neutrons= Larger number
protons= Smaller number
