Atomic Structure Flashcards
What did John Dalton contribute to the atomic structure?
- Atoms are indivisible
- Atoms of the same element are identical
- Compounds are combinations of different types of atoms
What did JJ Thompson contribute to the atomic structure?
- Discovered the electron
- Produced the plum pudding model
What did Ernest Rutherford contribute to the atomic structure?
- The gold foil experiment
- Most of the atom consists of empty space
What did Neils Bohr contribute to the atomic structure?
- Electrons orbit the nucleus
- Electrons cannot occupy values of energies
What did James Chadwick contribute to the atomic structure?
- Discovered the neutron
- Nucleus consists of neutrons and protons
What is an isotope?
An isotope is when an atom has the same number of protons, but differing numbers of neutrons
What are the stages of Mass Spectroscopy?
1 - A sample is injected into the MS via injection, or a solid sample, which gets vaporized
2 - The vaporised sample is ionised/given a charge, and then accelerated in a high voltage electric field
3 - A detector measures the intensity of the beam
What is AAS?
- Atomic absorbtion spectroscopy
