Atomic Mass Spectrometry Flashcards
What are the steps involved in Atomic Mass spectrometry?
Vaporization
Ionisation
Acceloeration
Detection
What is vaporisation in Atomic Mass spectrometry?
Vaporisation of a sample in a vacuum chamber which passes into the mass spectrometer
What is Ionisation in Atomic Mass spectrometry?
When the sample passes through a high energy beam of electrons where collisions cause the gases to lose electrons and form positive ions
What is Acceleration in Atomic Mass spectrometry?
The formed ions are accelerated through an electric field to form a high speed beam of cations through a strong magnetic field
What is detection in Atomic Mass spectrometry?
Individual ions get deflected by the field and the detector measures the intensity and radius of deflection of each of the beams of ions
