Atomic Structure Flashcards
In the P.T, what is a group?
A column (there are 8 columns)
Why do elements in the same group have similar chemical properties?
They have the same number of outer electrons
What is a period?
a row of elements
What groups are very reactive?
1+7
What are elements made up of?
atoms
Where are Protons and Neutrons found?
the nucleus of an atom
Where are electrons found?
in electron shells orbiting the nucleus
What is the atomic number used for?
to order the elements in the periodic table
What is the charge of a proton
+
What is the charge of an electron
-
Does a neutron have charge
no
What is the mass of a proton
1
What is the mass of an electron
0
what is the mass of a neutron
1
What holds the electrons in place
the positive nucleus
What is the mass number?
M=Atomic No. + No. of Neutrons
What is an ion?
An atom which has either gained or lost electrons (they also now have charges due to this)
If an atom gains electrons, will it be positive or negative?
negative
If an atom loses electrons, will it be positive or negative?
positive
What is an isotope?
an element with different mass numbers and No. of Neutrons.
What is the R.A.M?
the average mass of all isotopes of an element taking into account the number of isotopes.
Are metal ions positive or negative?
positive
Are non metal ions positive or negative?
negative
