Atmosphere Flashcards
Why are winds curved?
Because of earth’s rotation( the Coriolis Effect)
What is air pressure the result of?
The weight of a column of air pushing down on an area
Why do thermometers work?
Because the liquid expands when heated and contracts when cooled
What direction do winds flow?
West to East
What is wind?
The horizontal movement of air from an area of high pressure to an area of low pressure
How is low pressure made?
When warm air rises
How is high pressure made?
When cooler air sinks
What is a major factor in weather?
Heat
What is the convection current?
When air blows from the equator to the poles and from the poles to the equator
What direction do northern hemisphere winds turn?
To the right
What direction do Southern Hemisphere winds turn?
To the left
What does warm air do at the equator?
It rises
What does cold air do at the poles
It sinks
Is more air pressure closer or farther from Earth
Closer to Earth
