Atmoshpere Flashcards
Atmosphere
the envelope of gases surrounding the earth or another planet.
Conduction
the process by which heat or electricity is directly transmitted through a substance when there is a difference of temperature or of electrical potential between adjoining regions, without movement of the material.
Convection currents
a current in a fluid that results from convection.
Corilolis effect
an effect whereby a mass moving in a rotating system experiences a force (the Coriolis force ) acting perpendicular to the direction of motion and to the axis of rotation.
Global winds
Global Winds are the dominant prevailing wind patterns that blow in a fairly constant
Greenhouse effect
the trapping of the sun’s warmth in a planet’s lower atmosphere due to the greater transparency of the atmosphere to visible radiation from the sun than to infrared radiation emitted from the planet’s surface.
Ionosphere
the layer of the earth’s atmosphere that contains a high concentration of ions and free electrons and is able to reflect radio waves.
Local winds
one of a number of winds that are influenced predominantly by the topographic features of a relatively small region.
Sea Breeze
a breeze blowing toward the land from the sea, especially during the day owing to the relative warmth of the land.
Stratosphere
the layer of the earth’s atmosphere above the troposphere, extending to about 32 miles (50 km) above the earth’s surface
Temperature
the degree or intensity of heat present in a substance or object, especially as expressed according to a comparative scale and shown by a thermometer or perceived by touch.
Thermal energy
Thermal energy is an example of kinetic energy, as it is due to the motion of particles, with motion being the key.
Thermosphere
the region of the atmosphere above the mesosphere and below the height at which the atmosphere ceases to have the properties of a continuous medium.
Troposphere
the lowest region of the atmosphere, extending from the earth’s surface to a height of about 3.7–6.2 miles (6–10 km), which is the lower boundary of the stratosphere.
Windchill Factor
Windchill factor is the perceived decrease in air temperature felt by the body on exposed skin due to the flow of air.
