They have an increased demand for calories because of the amount of work they put into breathing. They often have dyspnea so they may need soft foods, and they need adequate fluids to help them have good hydration.

- The nurse should also check the gastric contents for a pH between 0 and 4.
- After feeding, the nurse should flush the tube with 30 mL of tap water.
