- low status - didnt like the idea of being professionals
- urbanisation - lack of space to play
- more free time/increased lesisure time, workers spent less time in factories
- more disposable income
- improves transport, can spectate and travel to matches

- increased organisation
- open to bribes - “low morality”
- 1901 - wage cap £4 per week
