Atherosclerosis Flashcards
1
Q
1
A
Endothelium is damaged
- High blood pressure
- Toxins from cigarette smoke
2
Q
2
A
Inflammatory response occurs
3
Q
3
A
White blood cells move into the artery wall to repair the damage
4
Q
4
A
Artery wall thickens and accumulates cholesterol, forming a fatty deposit (atheroma) beneath the endothelium
5
Q
5
A
Calcium salts and fibrous tissue start building up, causing a hard swelling (plaque)
6
Q
6
A
Plaques narrow the lumen, causing higher blood pressure and setting up a positive feedback loop
7
Q
7
A
Blood comes into contact with collagen and forms a blood clot (thrombosis)
8
Q
8
A
Blood clot may block the artery, starving the cells of oxygen, or break away and block a smaller arteriole (embolism)
