Q

What did Athanasius believe?

A

He disagreed with Arius, he thought Christ had to be divine otherwise there would be no salvation for sinful humans.
- only God can save so the Redeemer must be divine
- the Redeemer must also be human, otherwise humans could not participate in his nature and thus participate in the salvation wrought by him

Q

What are according to Athanasius the two natures of Christ?

A
  1. divine: God, the Word, is the Creator; He
is able/has the power to recreate humanity
  2. Human: humanity is the ‘party in need’; the
human race has to be renewed ‘from
within’ – (‘nature’ is a collective concept >
    representation)
17
Q

What does Athanasius connect in his De incarnatione verbi dei?

A

he connects salvation from sin and death to the quest for true knowledge

18
Q

What is his view about salvation and the quest for true knowledge?

A

he thinks sin is a problem in double sense:
1. is had caused eternal death
2. it has darkened the proper knowledge humans have about the divine
So salvation through belief in Jesus Christ solves these two problems and creates
1. new life after death
2. the possibility of acquiring true knowledge about God

19
Q

What are two other important themes in the book?

A
  • Miracles demonstrate the divinity of Christ
  • Ethical lifestyle of Christians demonstrates
the truth of the Christian faith
