Religious teachings guide and inform how people respond to religious belief
Eg catholic social teaching is a body of catholic teachings that call people to put into practise important beliefs about God and gods creation.
Religious rituals
Religious rituals use a symbolic actions, such as movement, gestures and words to express and promote what is important about faith.
Eg religious ritual the sacraments
Religious signs and symbols
A basic understanding of religious signs and symbols is important for understanding what occurs in religious practises, rituals, celebrations and events.
Essentially religious symbols covey meaning and help people see beyond the surface of things
Religious practises
Are a recognised way of doing something religious. Religious practises can be a way of praying or style of worship.
Eg Catholics the sacraments are the sacred actions that make present Catholic belief
Creeds
Profession of faith, something that’s lists the beliefs of a group of people.
Catholic uses a creed to summarise basic beliefs of its faith, things that God has revealed through the teachings of the old and New Testament
Eg use them at baptisms and it is recited all over the world at masses.
Importance of apostles creed
The apostles creed is based on the teachings of the first apostles.
The first part is about beliefs about God the father, the second part is about teachings about God the son Jesus. Third part basic teachings
Nicene creed
Is more detailed then the apostles creed because it elaborates on some simple statements and addresses specific heresies at the the time.
Emphasises the point of the trinity in three parts.
Main aim of the creeds was to be able to distinguish an define the church and the world.
Religious belief
A religious belief is a conviction about an idea central to a religion and expresses a religious truth
Explain catechism of the church
A summary of beliefs and teachings of Christian religion in the form of questions and answers used for religious instruction
It is a summary of the beliefs of the catholic faithful.essential and fundamental elements of the church’s faith.
Catholic understanding of revelation
Revelation is the continuing and dynamic by which God communicates personally with God. It is when God reveals himself to us.
Eg “ when God made himself known to people when he came out to Abraham and his descendants”
Explain what it means when “god reaches out through revelation”
It is when God reaches out her speaks or guides us through things like the bible, religious signs and symbols, rituals and the sacraments. He also can reach out through creation.
Eg from St. Paul a letter to the Romans “ since the creation of the world….gods eternal power and divinity have become visible and recognised through creation”
Identify Core beliefs about Jesus
Jesus was born by Virgin Mary Only son of God He performed miracles He died on the cross to save us He rose from the dead He went body and soul into heaven He told people the word of God He told his apostles to tell people the word He was tempted by the devil
