AT- c Flashcards
What are the various glassware equipment used in biology?
petri dish
beaker
test tubes
conical flask
volumetric flask
graduated cylinder
Funnels
Why are conical flasks considered inaccurate?
They have inaccurate measurement markings, only a few markings
shapes which make them inaccurate for measurement purposes.
Why is a volumetric flask more accurate for making up solutions?
Has a calibrated marking so the volume can be measured.
designed to hold a specific volume, top is narrow to prevent spillage and the bottom of the flask is round so solution/solute is well distributed
Why are funnels considered useful?
have a narrow neck so only certain volumes or solutions can be transferred
Allows for solutions and liquids to be transferred from one glassware to another without spillages
What and why is a serial dilution conducted?
step by step dilution of a substance in solution
It enables you to make solutions with very low concentrations without having to measure out very small volumes, improving accuracy
Describe a method of conducting a dilution series
1) add one part … culture to eg. 9 part water
2) MIX
3) repeat using e.g 9 parts water and 1 part 10-1 + 10-2
